More than you wanted to know about us

Personal - Ciára - Flying

Let's start at the beginning.  In the beginning, there was darkness.  And God said:
Too far back?  OK let's try again.

February 2005

I'm Timothy M. Metzinger - "Tim".  I'm forty, and I live in northern Virginia near DC.  I'm married (eleven years) to Catherine.  New to the family is Ciara Aida Metzinger, who was born in April, 2003.

My Background:

I was born in Connecticut, and lived there for most of my childhood, with stints in New Jersey, New York, Iowa, and Missouri.  At 11 we moved to Kentucky, and I stayed there until graduating from High School.  I went back to New England for college, and I attended Boston University, MIT, and the Berklee College of Music.  After graduating from Berklee, I joined the US Coast Guard and spent three years on active duty, mostly at a small boat station in Barnegat Light, NJ  and an air station in Cape May, NJ, with side trips around the country doing systems work.

My Work Life:

II currently work as an Information Systems professional at Nortel Government Solutions  (formerly PEC Solutions before our merger) - a consulting firm that caters to the public sector.  I worked for a short time before this at a little "dot-com" startup, which died when the venture capital became impossible to find.  Before that, I spent 10 years with the Drug Enforcement Administration, where I was privileged to assist some of the finest professionals I've ever known - the DEA agents - in their mission of enforcing the US drug laws.  While at DEA I was fortunate to be the lead engineer on a project called Firebird, which replaced the DEA's computer infrastructure with modern PCs and networks.  The team won the first-ever Attorney General's Award for Excellence in Information Technology in 1998.  I'm shown below getting my award from Janet Reno (yes she is VERY tall - I'm 6'3").

My Hobbies

I'm an avid reader of sci-fi, thrillers, and mysteries.  I enjoy listening to nearly all kinds of music except bad country music and gangster rap.  By far, my biggest obsession is flying small aircraft.   I learned to fly in 1996 and have pursued it and now have a Commercial Pilot's certificate, with single and multiengine ratings and an instrument rating. I rent airplanes from the Frederick Flight Center as needed, and am looking to buy one of my own soon (although the baby....)

I love flying because it requires a very high degree of focus, and immediately rewards you with great views, the ability to go places quickly, and the freedom to travel where you wish, when you wish.  I love to visit places I've never been, meet the people there, and sample the food (flying somewhere for lunch is often called the hundred dollar hamburger - because the burger is only $5.00 but the operating costs for the airplane are another $95.00).  My flying section has a list of the states I've visited, pictures of attractions, and a schedule of trips coming up in the future.  If I'll be coming to your neck of the woods in the future, drop me a line - we might be able to break bread together.

Our Pets

We recently lost Korben, our orange cat, to kidney failure.   Leeloo has a new companion in Lorelei, a brown striped tabby kitten.   They get along well.
